The climate–security nexus: from conflicts to synergiesWorkshop on climate change action for peacebuilding and human security

The climate–security nexus is a framework for complex cause-effect interactions of four elements, climate change, natural resources, human security and social stability, which can combine in compound events, tipping points and cascading risks. While climate change could exacerbate conditions for climate actions, each problem can be addressed by separate policies.

The workshop analyses the evolving climate-security nexus, addresses the connections between conflict and cooperation, and considers transitions towards an integrated nexus of synergies and solutions. It thereby focuses on climate adaptation initiatives and their links to conflict.

Researchers from across the globe have expressed their interests from a wide spectrum of perspectives. There is much attention on the theoretical underpinning of the complex interactions from a global perspective. Multiple case studies from diverse geographic settings will draw deeper insights on local nexus narratives as well. In doing so, traditional, business as usual climate change adaptations, and other climate actions are interrogated to find a way forward towards active peacebuilding.

Through integrating the problem in such a broad and open debate, we might achieve a clearer view on how to help establish environmental and sustainable peace and cooperation on a local, regional, and global scale. Now, more than ever it is important to synchronise our work so that we can contribute to an intercultural and interdisciplinary scholarship.

Following the release of the IPCC 6th assessment report and the recent UN climate change conference in Glasgow (COP26), it becomes clear that the question of sustainable policies is nothing we can adjourn any further. We are happy to discuss the main challenges and develop ideas of implementing an integrated framework with our keynote speakers.
