The graphic shows the outcomes of the Hamburg Climate Futures Outlook 2023, a comprehensive CLICCS study. The symbols represent the ten key social drivers on the way to worldwide deep decarbonization that were investigated. In this regard, net-zero emissions by 2050 are the prerequisite for limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees. In addition, six physical processes were assessed in terms of whether or not they jeopardize attaining the Paris Agreement temperature goals. As the graphic shows, three physical processes are moderate obstacles to achieving climate targets (orange hexagon), blocking the way to the climate targets (blue sphere). The seven social drivers on a sky-blue background support decarbonization – although no single driver can deliver the deep decarbonization needed. Currently, two social drivers directly inhibit decarbonization (red hexagon): consumption patterns and corporate responses.
