At this year’s General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) from April 23 to 28 in Vienna experts from Hamburg’s Cluster of Excellence CLICCS and Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN) presented their research on the climate and sustainability. The forum focused not only on new findings in basic geoscientific research, but also on exchanging notes on how to overcome key social and ecological challenges. A joint booth shared with the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ) offered a central information point for interested parties from around the world.

One major focus of the Assembly was on climate research. CLICCS and CEN experts from various disciplines shared their latest findings in a range of presentations and poster sessions – as did several young investigators from the CEN’s SICCS. In addition, the new Hamburg Climate Futures Outlook was unveiled. The study gathers the latest advances in a range of disciplines and assesses them in connection with future climate scenarios and their plausibility. The technical basis for the comprehensive climate research conducted in Hamburg is coordinated by the DKRZ. In a range of presentations, DKRZ staff showcased the high-performance computing systems, data management and data archives that are essential to climate research.

Once a year, 15,000 scientists from more than a hundred countries come together at the EGU’s General Assembly to share notes on the latest discoveries and advances in all disciplines of the earth, planetary and space sciences, get caught up to speed, and make new contacts. In addition to planetary sciences and Earth observation, core topics include polar research, environmental pollution, and natural hazards.
The EGU was founded in 2002, merging the European Geophysical Society (EGS) and the European Union of Geosciences (EUG). Today, as Europe’s leading non-profit organization, it is home to more than 18,000 members from around the globe.
