In recent months, significant progress has been made within climate research institutions in Hamburg to address diversity issues and promote inclusivity in research. The Cluster of Excellence Climate, Climatic Change, and Society (CLICCS), the School of Integrated Climate System Sciences (SICSS), Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M), and its International Research School (IMPRS) have collaborated to strengthen their bonds and raise awareness about gender issues.
Two documentary screenings have been organized, open to the public, followed by discussion sessions. These events have been tremendously successful, evident from the high audience turnout and the positive feedback received. Encouraged by the response, the organizers have decided to extend the screening series, aiming to foster continuous discussions with the goal of bringing about effective change.
The first screening featured the movie "Picture a Scientist" (read the commentary on this movie and following event). The second movie screened was "The Leadership," directed by Ili Baré, which explores the challenges faced by female leaders and the reasons behind the underrepresentation of women in leadership positions.
Without giving away spoilers for those who have not yet watched the documentary, "The Leadership" depicts the Antarctic expedition of 76 female scientists, aiming to transform themselves into the leaders they aspire to be. However, during the journey, the scientists share deeply personal stories, evoking a profound emotional response and raising fundamental questions about the essence of leadership. Startling revelations at the end of the movie leave the audience emotionally stirred. Following the screening, participants engaged in lively and inspiring conversations over drinks and snacks. Even an hour after the screening, audience members remained in the room, discussing the movie and relating it to their own experiences. This event highlighted the strong interest and engagement in addressing gender diversity in leadership positions and fostering positive change.
During the event, one audience member, María Jesús Rapanague (MPI-M), shared her first-hand impression as a participant in the tutoring program featured in the movie. She said, "My experience in “Homeward Bound” has been very good so far. The program aims to have more women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) leading for a better future, so we learn a lot about leadership, strategy, visibility, and science. However, it is also very challenging, starting from the financial issues to cover the program and the trip to Antarctica, and pushing ourselves beyond our comfort zones. “Homeward Bound” has helped me grow and appreciate my skills more. I can't wait to put into practice what I've learned so far and continue learning, with the hope of going to Antarctica next year."
Clearly, building a just and inclusive society requires attention from various perspectives. The screening event demonstrated a strong commitment to addressing gender diversity in leadership positions and promoting positive change. It emphasized the need to overcome barriers and stereotypes that hinder women's career development. CLICCS and MPI-M are dedicated to creating an inclusive and diverse working environment where both women and men have equal opportunities to reach their full potential and succeed.
In summary, the screening provided staff members with an opportunity to gain insights into the challenges and opportunities for female leaders and discuss initiatives to promote greater gender diversity in leadership positions. The event showcased a strong dedication to creating an inclusive and diverse working environment and driving positive change. The screening attracted a large number of staff members who were eager to learn more about the challenges and opportunities for female leaders. As a result, an idea rose to co-create and develop a branded series that would put Hamburg on a map as climate center that not only promotes excellent science, but also includes and promotes diverse actors that contribute to that science.
The further series is currently being developed, so stay tuned for updates and announcements.
