Award 2009: Dr. Hui Wan
The Wladimir Köppen Award was presented for the first time by the KlimaCampus of the University of Hamburg on July 7, 2009. The award, which carries a value of 5,000 Euros, goes to Dr. Hui Wan of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology (MPI-M) for her excellent dissertation in numerical weather and climate modelling.

Prof. Dr. Klaus Fraedrich emphasized that the jury was particularly impressed by the innovative numerical methods applied by Hui Wan. They represent an important contribution to the next generation of predictive models.The young scientist was born in the Province of Hubei in China. She studied Atmospheric Physics at the "Chinese Academy of Sciences" in Beijing and successfully applied for a Doctoral Scholarship at the ‚International Max Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling’ (IMPRS-ESM) in the year 2004. In August of 2005 she started her work in Dr. Marco Giorgetta’s group on ‚Global Climate Modelling’ at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology. She received her Doctoral Degree „summa cum laude“ from the University of Hamburg on 30 January 2009. She is now continuing her research work at the KlimaCampus in Hamburg.
