In a recent Briefing Note from the International Science Council (ISC), Jana Sillmann, Professor of Climate Statistics and Climate Extremes, analyzes how problems will likely become more globally intertwined in the future: “In a globalized world confronted not only with climate change but new and old conflicts alike, not to mention the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, there are no easy answers,” says Sillmann. Therefore, instead of straightforward analyses, she and her co-authors recommend using “toolbox approaches,” working toward solutions step by step, and being prepared to learn and potentially take a new angle along the way.
“Physical, societal and geopolitical risks can be intertwined, interdependent or mutually reinforcing,” Sillmann explains. “Accordingly, we need completely new risk management strategies.” For some time now, understanding how risks emerge and how their effects can spread across entire sectors and at various levels and scales has become an important focus area for research.
