Panel discussion for internationalsHow to start successfully at the Universität Hamburg

What are the visa requirements? And what support services are available from the university? These questions were clarified at the panel discussion "International Arrival" on June 7, 2023. The goal: to support researchers and students who have only recently arrived in Hamburg or are planning a stay. The panel discussion was organized by CLICCS and the other clusters of excellence at the Universität Hamburg as part of the "Diversity Days".
Those planning to transition into the German academic system face a number of hurdles. To help internationals overcome them, important tips and information were shared at the "International Arrival" panel discussion. Right at the beginning, Jan Kochanowski, head of the Welcome Service at the Universität Hamburg, provided insights into visa regulations, legal rights and support services for international participants. In addition, the plenum talked about ways in which researchers and students can get in touch with internationals. According to the plenary participants, this promotes a sense of community and facilitates cooperation.
The discussion also addressed the intricacies of the academic system in Germany - shedding light on structure, expectations and specifics. This knowledge gave the newcomers the understanding they needed to navigate their academic path.
Insights into the future academic career
Through the panel discussion, the participants not only gathered important information: They were also able to share experiences and challenges they have faced so far in Germany. This also made it possible to establish closer contacts among themselves.
