Exploring possible and plausible land-use futures in rural areas
In the C2 project, we integrate social and natural science disciplines to contribute to answering the overarching CLICCS research question “Which climate futures are possible and which are plausible?” in the context of land use and sustainable development.
C2 investigates coupled human-environment systems related to land use and assesses opportunities and limits for sustainable land management adaptation. Interdisciplinary assessments of interdependent societal goals of land use, as expressed by several of the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs), aim to improve our understanding of their synergies and trade-offs and help to provide pathways to solving the challenge of sustainably producing food, material and energy for a growing population.
Thereby, C2 explores possible and plausible land-use futures in rural areas. We work in five case study regions across the world, i.e. Amazonia/Brazil, Namibia/Zambia, Nepal, Northeast India, and the Metropolitan Region Hamburg in Germany, that differ in climatic, ecological, and social preconditions and risk configurations.
