Diverse Ways of Knowing
The best use must be made of existing local and scientific knowledge to effectively progress towards sustainable adaptation. Tapping into yet underutilized sources of knowledge, such as pluriversal views on land use conflicts as well as scientific papers written in languages other than English holds great potential for effective biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation, enabling or enhancing plausible adaptation.
By screening hundred thousands of peer-reviewed papers in 16 languages, we show that non-English-language studies provide critical evidence for effective global biodiversity conservation.
In many languages, the number of scientific publications significantly increased over the past 40 years, at a rate similar to English-language articles
